About Omid Hajishirmohammadi.
Omid is an innovator in disruptive impact, focusing on origami-based circular architectural techniques and radical collaboration in construction. As the CEO of 4 OMID B.V. and a Climate Mayor in Rotterdam, he champions the creation of sustainable habitats on Earth and beyond. With over 25 years of experience, Omid pioneers solutions for the climate-housing crisis and sustainable construction, both on Earth and the Moon.
From Inspiration to Innovation
Omid Hajishirmohammadi grew up in a family deeply rooted in the architecture and construction sectors. From a young age, he was inspired by his grandfather, father, and other relatives who were involved in traditional construction. Omid was the first among his relatives to study architecture academically, igniting a passion that would shape his professional life.
As a child, Omid enjoyed spending time on construction sites, where he was often given responsibilities beyond his years. These experiences instilled in him a deep appreciation for the industry and a drive to innovate within it. One memorable moment was in 1995 when his professor, Dr. Zahed, taught him to draw trees with watercolor, advising him to "look at nature and draw as an architect." This guidance, accompanied by a demonstration of two painted trees, left a lasting impact on Omid.
Supported by his professors Dr. Saghafi and Omid's relatives, He designed and partially built a six-floor building in his hometown of Tehran from 1996-1998, starting when he was just a sophomore student.
In 2000, his professor Dr. Khoshnevis, impressed by Omid's designs, motivated him to expand his use of geometry into three dimensions, ultimately encouraging him to develop his own architectural techniques.
These formative experiences gave Omid the confidence to co-found his first cooperative company with his peers in 2002 while preparing for their Master's thesis. Shortly after the official launch, the Avaj earthquake struck, prompting Omid and his team to begin their professional careers by rebuilding in the mountainous area of Avaj. In 2003, while introducing their company, 3rdMco, to Dr. Nasiri, the advisor of the city of Qazvin, Omid was encouraged to dream bigger and think globally, inspiring him to add value to United Nations initiatives and tackle global issues.
Omid's journey continued to evolve with significant milestones. The 2002 earthquake experience, where he and his friends spent two years in tents to build 17 homes destroyed in the disaster, taught him the inadequacies of the current construction system for post-crisis rebuilding. This realization fueled his determination to drive systemic change in the sector.
From 2005 to 2013, Omid served as the CEO of 3rdMco, utilizing an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) business model. During this time, he designed and built several buildings in Qazvin city, implementing innovative designs and technologies for the first time, such as gas pressure welding rebar, soil nailing, and post-tensioned concrete slabs. This period of innovation and success was supported by Professor Hamed Manifar, whose guidance was invaluable.
In 2013, after selling his company, Omid embarked on an international journey, improving his English skills in the Philippines. The Filipino culture of collaboration during crises deeply influenced him. He witnessed the devastation of Typhoon Yolanda and participated in relief efforts, learning about the resilience of communities who rebuilt their homes annually despite recurring disasters. This experience reinforced his commitment to finding solutions for empowering people to rebuild sustainably after natural and man-made crises.
Two stories highlight Omid's determination and innovative spirit. In 1995, he designed a traditional Persian house with several inner courtyards and geometric designs for an architecture course. Despite three professors advising him against it, Omid persisted with the support of Professor Amir Kakavand, who recognized his talent and encouraged him to follow his passion. In 2000, Omid faced failure in Architectural Design 5 when he struggled to translate a three-dimensional geometric model into two-dimensional plans and sections. These experiences taught him that standing up for his talent and passion was never easy, but the journey of improvement was always rewarding.
By 2020, Omid recognized the urgent need to address the climate crisis and the role of the construction sector in achieving zero emissions. This led him to dedicate his life, resources, skills, and talent to empowering locals to rebuild hope by reconstructing their homes and fostering sustainable living on Earth. His vision extends beyond our planet, aspiring to create habitats on the Moon and beyond, showcasing the limitless potential of human achievement.
Omid's Ontology of Value test results highlight his strengths as an Achiever, Creator, and Linchpin, making him well-suited for entrepreneurship and academic environments. Passionate about space exploration, Omid continuously seeks opportunities to learn, network, and inspire others in the field. He proposes the establishment of a Circular NL Space Campus on Earth and the development of a Circular Moon Village, envisioning a future where space and Earth thrive in harmony, leaving a legacy of progress for generations to come.
